Vintage Ken Dolls
1961 - Mattel introduces Ken and his wardrobe. The first Ken stood twelve inches tall and was sold in a box, with fashion booklet, sandals, a towel and black wire stand. The first Ken was sold with flocked hair available as a blonde, a rare brunette, sold as a store exclusive, and dark brunette.
1962 - The first Ken doll's flocked hair would rub off easily so Mattel issued a new version of Ken in 1962 with painted hair.
1963 - This year, the painted hair on Ken shrunk a quarter of an inch to 11 3/4 inches! This oddball version of Ken also had loose leg joints and more pronounced kneecaps.
1964 - By this year Mattel corrected the fading vinyl issue, and the knobby kneecaps, and then returned Ken to his original 12-inch stature! (article continues below)...
VINTAGE KEN DOLL
1965 - A new Ken was introduced in 1965 with knees that actually bent and held position! Here he is with his new box and outfit.
1966 - By 1966, Ken was in dire need of a makeover! They made an attempt to update his image as a groovy rock n' roll dude in a Beatles inspired wig.
1969 - The Talking Ken dolls were introduced to the market in 1969. A small pulley and string behind the doll's neck allowed Ken to 'speak' through small holes in his back.
1971 - This is one of the most popular Ken dolls from the 1970's. He came wearing a psychedelic colored shirt with a fringe vest. Live Action Ken was sold in a regular box as well as a larger set that included a motorized battery operated stand that vibrated so he could dance.
1972 - Malibu Ken hits the beaches with Malibu Barbie, with new suntanned skin and swimsuits!
